Level 2 Award in Technical Understanding of Intumescent Fire Protection
Aim: to enable delegates to familiarise themselves with the more popular products and systems used in intumescent paint protection to structural steel and be aware of the ‘do’s and don’ts’ for installing such products, providing an overall understanding of why it is important that they are installed to specification.
Delivery: The sessions will be delivered using mainly PowerPoint presentations and group discussion. Photographs and samples are used to emphasize certain aspects of the course.
Award: Each candidate will receive a certificate if a successful understanding has been gained.

Delivery:
The presentation looks generically at the types of protection and the method of installation for the protection system. This product module looks at ‘Intumescent Paint Protection to Structural Steel’.
The intumescent paint protection to structural steel module provides an introduction to some of the intumescent paint systems available and their installation requirements when protecting structural elements such as columns and beams etc. The module also looks at how the correct application of the system is important in slowing down the heat attack upon structural steel elements in a fire situation. The module is generally run at two levels – introductory (aimed at those people with little or no experience in the basic requirements of the building regulations) and advanced (those with some knowledge of the building regulations). The differences between the two levels are highlighted below.
The first part of the module examines some of the more common types of intumescent paint protection systems available and the physical properties that make these paints so unique. At an advanced level this involves examination of an increased number of systems and their properties.
The second section looks briefly at how the systems are fire tested and explains how the manufacturer’s information is produced.
The third part of the module specifically looks at the coating system. The presentation looks in detail at the preparation and protection used on the substrate, application and equipment used for the intumescent coat and finally the top seal. In the advanced level training this is covered in greater depth with more detail on the equipment used, site application/conditions and other problems encountered with such a system. Also, within the advanced level typical problems on site are emphasized by examination of several specific site ‘case studies’.
The final part covers a very important area of the intumescent paint system – quality records. Methods of site measuring, the instruments available and recording of the data are discussed. Health & safety is also examined as this becomes even more relevant when using solvent based paints.
Assessment:
There is a written test after which one to one feedback is given. This is a knowledge based test which requires a pass mark of 60% and above.
